In order to realize the theoretical performance benefits of the Field Reversed Configuration (FRC) spacecraft propulsion concept, AFRL/RQRS is developing a high fidelity modeling and simulation capability. For the experimental configuration under consideration, a review of the pertinent dimensionless parameters indicate that viscous effects should be included.
This work details recent progress in upgrading a multifluid simulation code from inviscid to viscous flow through the implementation of the Braginskii transport equations. Validation results for the Hartmann validation problem will be presented. The FRC formation problem will then be examined in both viscous and inviscid limits. Distribution A: Approved for public release; distribution unlimited; Clearance No. 18369.
