Asymmetric Energy Loss of Jets Due to Collective Flow in Heavy-Ion Collisions*

At high energies, jets lose energy primarily through the radiation of multiple soft gluons; for jets created in nuclear environments such as the quark-gluon plasma produced in heavy-ion collisions, the resulting pattern of this radiation carries information about the spatial and momentum distribution of particles in the medium.  Using a recently-derived theoretical framework for jet-velocity coupling, we study the influence of a relativistic expanding plasma on the pattern of medium-induced radiation from jets.  We find that the pattern of medium-induced radiation is sensitive to the magnitude and direction of the velocity, leading to the asymmetric radiation of soft gluons preferentially in the direction of the velocity.  We also explore the implications of this mechanism for the deposition of energy and momentum in the plasma and measured collective flow.
