Laser slowing toward a 3D MOT of CaH molecules

Direct laser cooled molecules could provide new opportunities for the creation of ultracold exotic atomic gases, among which calcium monohydride (CaH) molecules stand out as a promising platform for ultracold hydrogen. We report our results on white-light (and chirped) slowing of CaH molecules. We obtain a high photon scattering rate (~10⁶ s^-1) and detect molecules with velocities below 50 m/s. The results are in good agreement with Monte Carlo simulations accounting for all higher vibrational losses and predissociation. We further show our progress toward a 3D radio-frequency MOT of CaH. Our results indicate that a 3D MOT of CaH is within reach in the near term.
