An apparatus for coupling two-dimensional materials to cavity photons*

We present an experimental platform for investigating hybrid light-matter states through the coupling of photons and material excitations in a cryogenic optical cavity. Our instrument features a vibrationally isolated confocal cavity that serves both as an multimode optical resonator and as part of the thermal shielding for the sample. The system is now built, and our first experiments are focusing on the exploration of the cavity-exciton state in 2D MoSe2. Additionally, we have theoretically characterized a transverse double-pumping scheme to directly populate optical phonons by means of a superradiant transition.
