Individual addressing of trapped ions and atoms enables the simulation of complex many-body spin-spin models and quantum computation. Spatial light modulators offer the flexibility to generate arbitrary light patterns with high efficiency. We report on the generation of beam arrays with both arbitrary phase and amplitude control with a single phase-only SLM. We use a modified GSW algorithm that allows us to control both the phase and intensity of the resultant light pattern using iterative feedback on the phase pattern of a single SLM ^[1]. We discuss how the SLM is also used for the characterization and correction of wavefront errors and aberrations caused by elements in the optical path. We discuss an application of such a beam array in the implementation of a σ_zσ_zlight shift gate via ²S_1/2-²D_5/2 quadrupole transition^[2,3] in a ¹⁷¹Yb⁺ trapped ion system using an array of TEM01 beams that allows us to couple to the axial modes of motion ^[4].
