3D-printed ion traps for quantum applications

Coherent operations on trapped ions were recently demonstrated in an LLNL-fabricated 3d-printed ion trap [1]. The achieved fidelities and implied vacuum pressures show promise for scalable ion traps based on this novel fabrication method. Here, we will discuss the LLNL initiative towards developing a scalable architecture based on this platform. I will discuss the flexibility of designing suitable electrode geometries that may be achieved with this method, focusing on adding a separate zone optimized for ion loading. I will also briefly discuss our progress towards printing traps on pre-patterned substrates.
