ion with a fully integrated photonic laser

Advances in integrated photonics and on-chip ion trap fabrication are promising for realizing compact transportable trapped-ion optical clocks. We demonstrate optical control of the ²D_5/2 to ²P_3/2 cleanout transition of a ⁸⁸Sr⁺ ion with a 1033 nm vernier ring laser. The laser has a narrow linewidth and a footprint of approximately 1 mm². With this laser we performed clock state cleanout when operating an optical clock and when ground state cooling a motional mode of the ion. To benchmark the spectral performance of the laser we performed spectroscopy on the ²D_5/2 to ²P_3/2 transition.
