A1.00001: Fermi condensates Invited Speaker: A gas of fermionic atoms is cooled down to ultralow temperatures to achieve a quantum degenerate Fermi gas. Remarkably, the interactions between atoms in this gas can be controlled experimentally. By tuning the interactions to be very strong and effectively attractive we have created and observed Fermi condensates. These condensates involve pairing of atoms, much like Cooper pairs of electrons in a superconductor. Because the interaction strength in the Fermi gas can be varied, this system provides unique experimental access to the connection between Bose-Einstein condensation and Fermi superfluidity. A1.00002: Differential Electron Scattering from Fundamental Atoms and Molecules Invited Speaker: A brief survey of recent work, in our laboratory, on the differential scattering of low energy electrons from H, He, H$_{2}$ and N$_{2}$ will be presented. This work includes accurate measurements of doubly-differential ionization cross-sections for electron impact ionization of H using a novel moveable source method [1] and an extension of this to the electron impact single ionization of He [2]. We will also present ongoing work in electron-molecule collisions, and discuss recent observations on interference effects in the electron impact, vibrational excitation, of N$_{2}$ Rydberg states [3] and the resulting break-down of the Franck-Condon principle. \newline \newline This work is supported by a grant from the National Science Foundation under the RUI Program. \newline \newline References: \newline [1] M. A1.00003: Applications of State-Selected Atoms: From Relativity to Radiology Invited Speaker: 1905 saw both the development of special relativity and the construction of the first institution dedicated to radiology. A century later, AMO physics is playing an important role in these seemingly disparate fields through the application of state- selected atoms to highly-stable clocks and novel biomedical imaging tools. I will discuss the work of my group and others in these areas. [Preview Abstract] |
