T03.00002: Spatially resolving black holes with infrared interferometry Invited Speaker: Jason Dexter Phase-referenced infrared interferometry with the new instrument GRAVITY at the VLT is sufficiently sensitive to study black hole systems with sub-milliarcsecond angular resolution. I will discuss the first results on spatially resolved kinematics of the quasar broad emission line region. In the Galactic center, GRAVITY has allowed the detection of coherent rotation of flaring electrons on event horizon scales. I will outline the implications of the observations for accretion physics, including the evidence of orbital motion in a strong magnetic field near the black hole. |

T03.00003: X-ray interferometry Invited Speaker: Phil Uttley Space-based X-ray interferometry would improve current X-ray image resolution by more than four orders of magnitude, to enable imaging of nearby stellar coronae, binary systems in our galaxy, and horizon-scales of the nearest supermassive black holes, with only a single meters-scale spacecraft. Imaging capabilities are essentially unlimited if a formation-flying interferometer can be achieved. The technology to build such instruments is relatively undeveloped and has been recommended for inclusion in ESA's Voyage 2050 technology programme. In this talk, I will outline the key technologies, challenges and discovery potential of a range of X-ray interferometry missions, from an astrometric pathfinder to a full imager. |
