Direct physical access to phenomena, inside the nucleus, being still impossible, the century old nuclear Standard Model had to rely exclusively on a directly unprovable house of cards of intricate interpretations. So, in my QUEST/RING theory, I radically clear up the Zoo of sub/nuclear particles, reject the reality of quarks and gluons and model the nucleus as made up solely of protons and nuclear electrons. I define the free neutron no longer as a fermion, but as a sub-hydrogen atom with an electron orbiting on an unstable close orbit around a proton, linked by a strong force. I was amazed to discover that the accuracy of the NIST CODATA published value of the neutron mass, is not confirmed by any direct mass measurement but only by unproven mass/energy balances. The resulting uncertainty raises hard new questions about fusion, which has not produced a first kwh, in 70 years. Does the measured atomic mass reflect all the inner energy? Are mass defect and the link between mass defect and fusion energy credible? Is fusion energy, actually carried away by the fusion product? Last but not least, is E= mc² valid in the nucleus? My simpler nuclear model quarkless/gluonless/neutronless, offers new keys for extracting the huge energy, weighing or not, just waiting in the nuclei.
