R6.00001: John Wheatley Award Talk: Promoting Under-Represented Physicists in Asian and Arab Countries and Muslim Women in Science Invited Speaker: Sultana Nahar Physics fascinates people's minds regardless of their geographic location. Often the best students choose the challending profession of physics. Physicists in developing countries in Asia and Arab countries work mostly on their own with limited resources or external collaboration and some do extraordinarily well. However, these dedicated individuals need the support and interactive modalities with their fellow physicists, particularly from developed countries, for coherent and rapid advances in knowledge, discoveries and inventions. My main objective is to promote and motivate physics education and research in developing and Arab countries to a level of excellence commensurate with that at U.S. institutions, and to facilitate connection through the strong network of APS. I have developed a general STEM based program. Another focus of this initiative is the very weak community of Muslim women in science, who have have remained behind owing to surrounding circumstances. To encourage them in scientific professions, and to enable them to nurture their intellectuality, we have formed a network called the International Society of Muslim Women in Science. It now has 85 enthusiastic and aspiring members from 21 countries. I will discuss these and the special needs of the these under-represented scientists, and how APS might lend them its valuable support. [Preview Abstract] |

R6.00002: International Aspects of Particle Accelerators Invited Speaker: Andrew Sessler The development of particle accelerators -- an activity that started about 1930 and is still on-going -- is very much an international activity. There have been international contributions to this development all along the way. The result is remarkably effective accelerators, for many different activities, spread throughout the world. Because many don't appreciate this story and, furthermore, that it is very much worthy of explicit recognition, this session and this talk have been organized. In the talk, a survey will be made of the start of accelerators: electrostatic machines, cyclotrons, betatrons, linacs, synchrotrons, and colliders. Then a brief survey will be given of the more important contributions to particle accelerators. For each of these concepts we shall discuss the physics behind the concept, the origin of the concept, and the places where development and implementation took place. Some of the various applications of accelerators will then be presented. Finally we shall show, in broad terms, the present distribution of particle accelerators. [Preview Abstract] |

R6.00003: Status of SESAME Synchrotron Light Source Invited Speaker: Hamed Tarawneh During this presentation, I will talk about the current status of the SESAME synchrotron radiation source (\textbf{SESAME}: \underline {\textbf{S}}ynchrotron light for \underline {\textbf{E}}xperimental \underline {\textbf{S}}cience and \underline {\textbf{A}}pplication in the \underline {\textbf{M}}iddle \underline {\textbf{E}}ast). SESAME is an international research center located in Allan, Jordan and the accelerator complex consists of new storage ring of an energy of 2.5 GeV injected at 800 MeV and the injector is based on the upgraded 22.5 MeV Microtron and 800 MeV booster from the BESSY-I machine donated by Germany. The results of the design work and the optimizations of the beam optics for the SESAME storage ring and booster accelerators' lattices will be presented. I will also report on the status of the storage ring main sub-systems and the scientific case of the SESAME facility with the planned day-one beamlines. [Preview Abstract] |
