C4.00001: Three-Nucleon Forces in Chiral Perturbation Theory Invited Speaker: Ruprecht Machleidt In the past decade, there has been substantial progress in the derivation of nuclear forces from chiral effective field theory (EFT). Accurate two-nucleon forces have been constructed at next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order (N3LO) and applied [together with three-nucleon forces (3NF) at NNLO] to nuclear few- and many-body systems---with a good deal of success. This may suggest that the 80-year old nuclear force problem has finally been cracked. Not so! In particular in the 3NF sector, there are substantial open issues, which is the focus of this talk. The leading 3NF (at NNLO) is well known and well tested. It is sizable, improves predictions (of three-nucleon scattering and the spectra of light nuclei), but also leaves unresolved issues. Recently, the derivation of the chiral 3NF at N3LO has been completed and first applications have been performed. This 3NF involves only leading vertices and no free parameters, contributes only modestly and, thus, may not be the solution of the open problems. Therefore, we have to proceed to N4LO of the $\Delta $-less theory (or N3LO of the $\Delta $-full theory). We argue that the latter may be sizable and has the potential to be the missing piece in the 3NF puzzle. [Preview Abstract] |

C4.00002: Three-Nucleon Forces in Lattice Effective Field Theory Invited Speaker: Dean Lee Effective field theory provides a systematic approach to interacting quantum systems at low energies and densities. Lattice effective field theory extends this approach to few- and many-body systems using non-perturbative lattice methods. I discuss recent applications of lattice effective field theory to the physics of bound nuclei. In particular I consider the contribution of three-nucleon forces to nuclear binding. C4.00003: Overview of Measurements Related to Three-Nucleon Force Effects Invited Speaker: Werner Tornow A review of specific three-nucleon and four-nucleon experiments will be given. The results of these measurements, when compared to state-of-the-art theoretical calculations, both with and without three-nucleon forces (3NFs), are the basis of our understanding that 3NFs are not only needed to correctly bind nuclear systems, but also to describe scattering states of few-nucleon systems. Recommendations will be given for obtaining improved or new experimental data to produce the database needed to put 3NFs in the continuum on a solid experimental ground. [Preview Abstract] |
