2025 CSU Space Grant Colorado Robotics Challenge: Shell*

The aim of this project was to design and manufacture a robotic rover that could traverse a simulated martian environment, consisting of sand dunes, variable weather and lighting conditions, and multiple obstacles. Our team first researched the most commonly utilized suspension systems and body styles used by professional engineering teams. This preliminary research yielded that the six-wheeled rocker-bogie style suspension system is the most reliable and heavily utilized within industry settings. Next, we researched the drive and steering mechanisms, along with obstacle detection systems. To approach these aspects of the project, we decided to use tank drive steering, powered by high torque, low speed motors, all controlled by a video detection system run on two Raspberry Pi. To conclude preliminary research, we discussed manufacturability of our proposed methods, and decided to work towards ease of manufacturing for the assembly process so that more time might be allotted to design, programming, and troubleshooting. The main manufacturing processes that were utilized are 3D printing— specifically with PETG and TPU filaments due to their favorable material properties — and basic traditional workshop practices such as drilling, sawing, and sanding. Our team created a fully functional suspension system, differential, and motor mount brackets, along with separate softwares planned for traversal and obstacle detection. We did this by 3D printing our designed components, and assembling the components as they were produced. We also used acquired hardware, such as nylon rods and connective pieces. This project sought to provide deeper insight and understanding into the methods and approaches used to achieve robotic mobility in extraterrestrial environments and further inform the space exploration process.
