W5C.00001: Recruiting Engineers to be Physics Teachers Invited Speaker: John Stewart This panel will discuss the challenges and rewards of preparing engineering students to be physics teachers. The panel will include members with diverse experiences working to help engineering students become highly qualified physics teachers. Kathleen Koenig will share her experiences at the University of Cincinnati where she identifies the need to recruit engineering students early, the need for dedicated advisers both in engineering and education, and a flexible degree path already mapped out. Vince Kuo (Colorado School of Mines) and Wendy Adams (Northern Colorado) will discuss their unique collaborative effort that pairs a primarily engineering school without a teacher preparation program with a partner college with a strong teacher preparation program. They will discuss the need for strong administration support and involvement of interested faculty which allowed recruitment of engineering students to become teachers. [Preview Abstract] |
