E32.00002: Physics as a street art Invited Speaker: Tatiana Erukhimova Celebrating physics with the community – is this utopia or a mission of every university? There are more and more science festivals around the country, but how can we reach out to people who would never come to campus on their own accord? Can physics outreach become not only a service provided by an academic department to the public but also a unique learning opportunity for students? |

E32.00005: Connecting With the Public Invited Speaker: Clara Moskowitz Science is no use to society if it occurs in a vacuum. I’ll speak about how scientists can better communicate their work to the public, both through the news media, including Scientific American, and directly. We’ll cover tips for distilling complex topics into digestible information, strategies to use when writing and speaking about physics, common myths about journalism and journalists, and ways to reach the public directly through social media, op-eds and blogs. I’ll also give you a window into our process at Scientific American and what we’re looking for from scientist authors. I hope to include useful info for seasoned communicators as well as scientists new to outreach. |
