non-interacting topological phases captured by the bulk symmetry band
indicators obtained in Ref. [1]. We first provide examples of unusual
surface states protected by time-reversal symmetry and crystalline
symmetries and discuss how these states can be constructed in systems
with strong spin-orbit. We then investigate possible phases with
unusual surface states which are not captured by the symmetry band
indicators. At the end, we discuss the possible extension of our
analysis to include particle-hole symmetry, thus incorporating the
10-fold way into our treatment.
