L02.00001: Some unforeseen aspects of electromagnetic and gravitational waves. Invited Speaker: Abhay Vasant Ashtekar
The foundations of the theory of gravitational waves in full non-linear general relativity were laid down over 55 years ago by Bondi, Sachs, Penrose, Newman and others. This well-established framework provides the anchor for numerical simulations of compact binary coalescences that are heavily used to characterize sources by the LIGO-VIRGO collaboration. Yet surprising aspects of the theory as well as limitations of its current use continue to emerge. I will illustrate some of the resulting conceptual tension with a few examples. |

L02.00003: The internal structure of dynamic vacuum black holes without symmetry Invited Speaker: Mihalis Dafermos I will discuss the internal structure of dynamic vacuum black holes without symmetry and the implications of this for various formulations of strong cosmic censorship. I will also discuss how this situation changes when a cosmological constant of either sign is added to the Einstein equations. Parts of this talk concern joint work with Jonathan Luk and Yakov Shlapentokh-Rothman. |
