D02.00001: Science Blogs and Talking Dogs: Reflections on 17 Years in Social Media
Invited Speaker: Chad R Orzel In this talk I will discuss lessons learned about physics and science communication in the online world, drawing on my experiences since starting a weblog to discuss physics in 2002. This will include pros and cons of various media, including blogs, Twitter, and Facebook, and a discussion of the opportunities and risks these technologies offer for physicists interested in engaging with a broad public audience. |

D02.00002: Navigating the public engagement landscape - what are my options? Invited Speaker: Elyse Aurbach As scientists increasingly explore their options to communicate and engage publicly, it is helpful for scholars early in their practice to understand the variety of opportunities that are available. Parsing these options - from blogging and social media, to science cafes, to policy engagement, to community-engaged teaching and research - can be a helpful exercise in aligning interests and motivations with specific opportunities to create a public impact. In an effort to define this option space, we have created a working conceptual framework to understand and categorize public engagement efforts, especially those activities available at academic institutions. During this interactive working session, participants should expect to reflect on their own motivations and public engagement efforts, explore possible intersections and divergences of their work with others, and consider a systems-level view to recognize and appreciate the diversity inherent in different forms and approaches to public engagement with science. We will also discuss different types of training and preparation opportunities which will facilitate effective, meaningful engagement. |

D02.00003: Connecting with the Non-scientist Public: Graphic Adventures in Science Engagement Invited Speaker: Clifford V Johnson The mission to engage members of the public with science requires a multi-faceted approach. Traditional outreach methods are vital, and need to continue, but they do not usually reach very far beyond audiences who are already predisposed to seek out information about science. To reach vastly more people and bring them into the conversation about science, we need to go where they are, and that is to the rest of the broader culture, including popular entertainment such as blockbuster movies and prime-time TV, and to literary forms beyond the traditional science book. This talk will describe work in this area over many years, describing consulting on movies such as Marvel's Thor: Ragnarok, Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame, TV shows like Agent Carter, Timeless, Star Trek: Discovery, and Genius (a 10 hour show about Einstein). It will also explain the process of writing and drawing a new kind of non-fiction graphic novel featuring physics, The Dialogues (MIT Press). |
