Y12.00001: Gravitational Wave Detection: A Historical Perspective Invited Speaker: Peter Saulson The search for gravitational waves began at the Chapel Hill Conference in January 1957, and will reach a successful conclusion at a set of observatories around the globe about sixty years later. This talk will review the history of the early thought experiments, the program of resonant mass detectors (``Weber bars''), and the development of the large interferometric detectors like Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo that are, it is hoped, about to make the first detections of gravitational wave signals. Y12.00002: The Kerr Metric: 50 Years Later Invited Speaker: Saul Teukolsky I will describe the events leading up to the discovery of the Kerr metric in 1963 and the enormous impact the discovery has had in the subsequent 50 years. The talk will emphasize the ``miraculous" nature of the solution, both as a simple analytic formula describing the most general rotating black hole, and as having unexpected mathematical properties that make many calculations tractable.
