M4.00001: Panofsky Prize Talk Invited Speaker: The first evidence and measurement of direct CP violation in the decay of neutral K mesons has been provided by the NA31 experiment at CERN. An introduction to the phenomenology of CP violation in the neutral kaon system will be followed by a review of the experimental technique employed and the results obtained. The amount of direct CP violation found is at the level expected in the Standard Model lately. [Preview Abstract] |

M4.00002: Panofsky Prize Talk Invited Speaker: After the NA31 discovery in 1987 of the first evidence of Direct CP violation in neutral Kaon to two-pion decays, the NA48 Collaboration at CERN designed a new experiment, with the aim of improving significantly the statistical and systematic accuracy of the measurement. A description of the beam, experimental apparatus and strategy of data collection and analysis will be given, emphasizing the features which were most relevant for the success of this second generation experiment. The results obtained for $\epsilon'/\epsilon$ and other selected measurements will be reported. The experimental study at CERN for Direct CP violation effects has been extended with high statistics and systematically accurate comparisons between positive and negative Kaon decays into three-charged pions and into one charged and two neutral pions. For this, NA48/2, experimental phase, the main change was the substitution of the neutral Kaon beams with a double beam of unseparated, momentum analized, K+ and K -- produced simultaneously and spatially overlapping throughout the fiducial decay region. The analysis of the data collected during 2003 and 2004 is approaching completion. Results will be reported which superseed in precision by more than an order of magnitude those of previous experiments. [Preview Abstract] |

M4.00003: Panofsky Prize Talk: Measurements of Direct CP Violation in the Decays of Neutral Kaons at Fermilab Invited Speaker: For many years after its discovery, CP Violation appeared to be a phenomenon isolated from the rest of physics. The first goal was to see if tCP violation was due to a ``superweak'' interaction in neutral kaon mixing (``indirect'' CP violation) or if there were a ``direct'' effect which would be manifest in the kaon decays themselves. For years, it seemed to be an interaction of the former kind, one that might not have any additional manifestations. A few years after the discovery, Sakharov realized that CP Violation in the very early Universe, in particular direct CP Violation, could lead to the matter-antimatter imbalance. A key development was the Kobayashi-Maskawa model which provided a framework in which to think about the problem, connecting it to quark mixing. This motivated a series of 2nd, 3rd, and 4th generation experiments to isolate the predicted direct effect. This talk will review how the problem was addressed in 3 Fermilab- based experiments spanning a 20 year period which culminated in a definitive detection of the effect by KTeV. The motivation and technical approaches to isolate this tiny effect with good control of systematic uncertainty will be reviewed together with the results and future prospects. [Preview Abstract] |
