H5.00001: From Diffeomorphisms to Dark Matter Invited Speaker: One of the symmetries of string theory is encoded in the Virasoro algebra. String field theory is a representation of this algebra. The coadjoint representation of the Virasoro algebra together with the algebra related to one dimensional gauge transformations, viz the affine Lie algebras, can augment theories of gravitation based on geometry such as general relativity, to produce a natural setting for a field theory that can be used as a dark energy or dark matter candidate. We discuss and explore how this might be done and how recent cosmology experiments constrain this possibility. [Preview Abstract] |

H5.00002: The Matter-Antimatter Asymmetry from Inflationary Gravity Waves Invited Speaker: We demonstrate for the first time a connection between two important numbers in physics: The baryon asymmetry index and the amplidute of density perturbations necessary for galaxy formation. This connection is made explicit during the period of cosmic inflation; which generates the observed matter-antimatter asymmetry from the presence of gravity waves. This mechanism is generic, as inflation always predicts gravity waves. Moreover, all three Sakharov conditions are beautifully interconnected and satisfied during inflation. We will also explore the connection of this mechanism to String Theory. [Preview Abstract] |

H5.00003: Parsing the WHIM Invited Speaker: We examine the structure of the warm/hot intergalactic medium (WHIM) in order to obtain clues to the formation history of this potentially substantial baryon reservoir. A better understanding of the physical properties and extent of this component is garnered by progressing beyond its threshold-based definition. We use a new algorithm to find and extract clumpy, tubular, and sheet-like structures in a large scale hydrodynamical simulation. The entropy, density profile and temperature distribution of the WHIM are obtained for these well-defined samples. The predicted temperature-density phase diagram for the intergalactic medium (IGM) is discussed. The results are used to tackle lingering questions about the portion of the WHIM in groups/clusters vs. the filamentary network, the formation mechanisms of the different components of the IGM, and consequently the very definition of the WHIM. H5.00004: Ghost Condensation Neutrino Physics Invited Speaker: Ghost condensation is a consistent infrared modification of gravity. As an avenue of exploration, we couple the ghost condensate to neutrinos. The result is an unambiguous model of neutrino interactions in a Lorentz violating background. This scenario features the goldstone boson of time-diffeomorphism breaking -- thereby yielding novel neutrino interactions. Consequently, specific bounds are placed on the parameter space using experimental data from existing neutrino oscillation experiments, SN1987a and the cosmic microwave background. In addition, we consider gauged ghost condensation and briefly comment varying experimental signatures. [Preview Abstract] |
