H1.00001: Higgs Decay in Hot and Dense Media Samina Masood We estimate the leptonic decays of Higgs boson in hot and dense media and study the effect of Higgs mass on these decay rates. H1.00002: Characterization of Irradiated 3D Sensors Haley McDuff The LHC particle accelerator has been operating successfully for the past two years; however, in 2013 the LHC will be shut down for maintenance and upgrades to the experiments. The ATLAS experiment will upgrade its Pixel Detector by adding a fourth layer of sensors called the Insertable B-Layer (IBL) which is designed to operate at much higher radiation levels due to its location. 3D sensors are a new type of silicon detector that has recently been developed in order to achieve the desired performance in the increased radiation environment of the IBL. Research by members of the UNM Department of Physics on the operation of 3D sensors before and after exposure to radiation comparable to the LHC environment is presented. [Preview Abstract] |

H1.00003: Particle Creation in the Sudden Approximation Paul N. Arendt, Jr., Ivan G. Avramidi We present a model of particle creation from the vacuum in the situation where one asymptotically time-independent background configuration changes to another, with the approximation that the change occurs instantaneously. Because time dependence has been removed from the model, the expressions for particles created involve only the properties of the spatial operators describing the two backgrounds. When the heat kernels of these operators can be computed, we show that the expressions for expected number and density of particles created can be given as simple integrals. However, the sudden approximation cannot be physically realistic for all modes, which may in turn lead to divergences in the expressions that require regularization. We give examples illustrating the method, and discuss its potential for modeling particle creation in violent phenomena. [Preview Abstract] |

H1.00004: Rapidity Divergences and Deep Inelastic Scattering in the Endpoint Region Ou Zhang, Sean Fleming The deep inelastic scattering cross section in the endpoint region, $x \sim 1$, has been subjected to extensive analysis. We revisit this process, and show that in the endpoint individual factors in the factorized hadronic tensor have rapidity divergences. We regulate these divergences using a recently introduced rapidity regulator. Interestingly, we find that there is no need for a resummation of rapidity logarithms. In addition, we give an operator definition of the parton distribution function in the endpoint region, and remark on the issues that should be considered in constructing this function. H1.00005: Observation of a new boson at the Large Hadron Collider Invited Speaker: Steven Wasserbaech On July 4, 2012 the ATLAS and CMS Collaborations at CERN presented the latest results from their searches for the Standard Model Higgs boson in proton-proton collisions at the LHC. A particle with mass near 126 GeV is observed in both experiments. In this talk I will discuss the search strategies employed by ATLAS and CMS to investigate various possible Higgs decay modes. I will also describe the properties of the new boson. [Preview Abstract] |
